Statement on the passing of Sir Mekere Morauta KCMG, 7th Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea

Pacific Friends of Global Health is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Mekere Morauta KCMG.

Sir Mekere will be remembered for his enormous contributions to the stability and reform of Papua New Guinea, serving as PNG’s 7th Prime Minister from 1999 to 2002.

Professor Brendan Crabb AC, Chair of the Pacific Friends of Global Health, expressed his deep sympathies: “Sir Mekere was a wise and exceptionally smart leader and statesman, a great Papua New Guinean and global citizen, a man of tremendous integrity, and a kind, thoughtful and gentle person.

“We send our sincere condolences to Lady Roslyn, a valued member of the Pacific Friends Advisory Board, son James, and the millions of Papua New Guineans who will mourn his loss. His passing is a huge loss to the nation and to the Pacific region.”
