In 2023, the Australian Global Health Film Festival reached new heights with a triumphant finale featuring the screening of The Last Daughter at the Melbourne Museum Theatre. This year’s festival, presented in partnership with Global Health Film, broadened its impact by showcasing films across four major cities: Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, and Perth. The expanded tour highlighted the festival’s commitment to raising awareness and sparking dialogue on critical global health issues through the power of film.
The festival showcased a diverse lineup of films, including Solstice, Call of Duty, Erasmus in Gaza, Soeurs de Combat, and The Last Daughter. These films addressed critical issues such as planetary health, mental health, gender and activism, climate action, and the experiences of First Nations peoples. Each screening was followed by dynamic panel discussions featuring the film directors and esteemed members of the global health community.
We extend our thanks to our exceptional moderators—Dr. Grant Blashki, Dr. Arnagretta Hunter, Jennifer Tierney, Selina Namchee Lo, and Prof. Cathy Vaughan—as well as our insightful panelists, including Helen Newman, Stuart Baker, Imogen Kane, David Barnden, Giorgia Dalla Libera Marchiori, Jess Travers-Wolf, Dr. Thomas Schaefer, Ban Hasanin, Susan Rumisha, Jessie Parish, Richard Yin, Mathilde Desurmont, Prof. Patricia Dudgeon, Dr. Nicole Redvers, and Brenda Matthews. Their contributions enriched the discussions and provided valuable perspectives.
The festival was made possible thanks to the generous support of The Nossal Institute for Global Health, the French Embassy in Australia, AFRAN, VicHealth, The George Institute for Global Health, and the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. We also acknowledge the support of MSF Australia, The Fred Hollows Foundation, Monash University, and The Australian National University.
As we reflect on the success of the 2023 Australian Global Health Film Festival, we express our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and supporters. We look forward to future events and continued engagement with our global health community.
